Application X3D to Collaborative Interior Design - Aleesha Institute

A collaborative interior design system is designed based on Virtual Reality. The techniques of X3D is adopted in this system, and the virtual scenes and Human-Computer Interaction have been realized.

Stepping into 21st century, the term “Virtual Reality” has become more and more popular. Virtual Reality is a technology that can immerse the user into a virtual three-dimensional world. The evolution of the computer technology and the rapid development of the visualization technology are increasing the demand of using the 3D technology on the network. The value of 3D displays is that it contains more information than 2D displays. The human visual system is very capable at capturing 3D images and turning them into knowledge. The applications of 3D technology used in 3D games, industrial applications and applications of virtual reality are all flourishing and developing.

The newest generation windows operating system, Windows Vista, offers user 3D man-machine interfaces, so the overall 3D applications of computers can be expected soon, even expanding to other fields[1]. X3D, an XML-based the label language, is the successor of Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) which describes 3D graphics. Being XML-based, it is not only expected to become the standard of 3D graphics in future, but also has advantages of cross-platform and easy to use. As the maturity of computer hardware equipment and the increment of network bandwidth, the applications such as product demos, guide of tourism and e-Learning can not be satisfied by simply using pure 2D views. It is important at present to build and construct the 3D virtual world that has real-time interaction[2]. Recently, by to the elevation of science and economic, the common people have asked for quality of life. Interior designers will have to accommodate themselves to the changed situation. It is necessarily to make some interior space plan day by day. According to interior designers’ responsibility, it is in two aspects, design and construction. Base on knowledge and experience interior designer would do a good design. In addition, user central concepts do a important part in communication between designers and customers with his request to space plan such as colors and spatial arrangement.

It would promote the design work in efficiency and qualities base on some accurate principles to fit users’ requirements. It is important at present to develop an interior design system based on Web3D. Under the system, the customers can do it themselves about space plan[3]. This paper is organized into a few sections. Section 2 is about some basic definitions in the system; section 3 presents the architecture of the system; section 4 lists our development environment and results of implementation. Finally, in section 5, we make a conclusion and point out the future work.

Various approaches and technologies for the implementation of a virtual environment can be adopted. One possible approach to implement the system described above is using Java for the interface, we use 3DS MAX to create the models of the furniture. X3D Authoring tool is selected X3DEdit, and HTML for all other multimedia pages (2D visualization) and the integration of the system.

In this paper, we design and implement a collaborative interior design system, which fulfills the concept of user centre. Users can experience the happiness of space plan. Our system offers the basic function at present, and the user interface is simple, so we hope to increase more abilities for it in the future, in order to make this system not only easy to use, but also powerful.
