Principal Color Elements

Principal color elements refer to color usage of removable stereoscopic dots, stereoscopic lines, and stereoscopic planes. For example, the dominant color of furniture and furnishings which occupies the largest design area usually takes up 60%-70% of the rom. This principal color creates a general impression on people, such as warm tone, cool tone, etc ,which can generate people delighted, warm, calm, solemn and other different feelings. Principal colors generally refer to the massive building colors of the interior ceiling, walls, doors, windows, floors, etc. We can integrate colors of these massive areas and use a series of colors with subtle-changed tone, for instance, low-purity and high brightness colors. Thus people can feel harmonious and natural. This technique is usually applied in home decoration and private space. While using high-purity color makes people excited and this technique is usually applied in business and public space. Principal color is the base of foil color and ornamental color; therefore it is crucial to interior color design. For example, white is always regarded as an ideal principal color for it is a kind of neutral color and can reconcile with all kinds of colors. Nowadays, in interior decoration people usually choose white as the basic color with a little change of hue, then grey series with high brightness which serve as the principal color come into being such as pink, pale yellow, pea green, French grey and so on. In addition, it can also bring out the crucial point in interior design by using high-purity or low brightness color as principal color, and light color as ornamental color. Comparing the two above-mentioned interior color designs, people can find that the former one makes placid and elegant effects, while the latter generates lively and striking effects. In practical design, the specific environment and interior usage functions should be considered and integrated in order to achieve the ideal effect in a flexible way as well as playing up strengths and avoiding weaknesses.

Foil Color Elements

Foil color elements are chosen according to the principal color. If the principal color tend to be red series, then we can adopt the same color but with different brightness as foil color, such as using slightly darker or lighter red ; we can also achieve the same effect with the adoption of change in hue, for instance, using the red approaching to yellow or blue as the foil color. Foil color plays an important part of indoor environment color as well as the most basic factor in the constitution of all kinds of color tones. Under the interaction of the principal color and the foil color, an overall effect of color with slightly variation would be achieved in indoor color environment. If there is only the principal color but no foil color indoors, the room, on the whole, will be inane and monotonous. Typically, foil color should take up 20%-30% of the indoor space area. Foil color also influences the furniture which occupies a certain indoor area. Furniture of different varieties, specifications, shapes and materials is the crucial factor displaying interior style and personality such as cabinets, dressers, beds, tables, chairs, sofas and so on. Their modeling should be in accordance with interior design style and their colors should be basically identical with foil colors. Thus the overall effects of the interior color can be achieved. In addition, the color of textile in home decoration is also the leading role of color matching, especially the large covering textile of curtain, purdah, bedspread, tablecloth, carpet, sofa and chair. Their material qualities, colors and pictures vary a lot but they have close relations with human. Generally, most of their colors are in conformity with foil color, a few other colors can be ornamental ones.

Ornamental Colors

Ornamental color refers to the most attractive and changeable color of small areas. Generally, ornamental colors are the optic centre in interior design such as the colors of image walls, small scenic spots, wall hangings, cushions for leaning on, decorations, flowers, plants and should take up 5%-10% of the indoor area. Designers always use the contrast colors of principal color and foil 214 colors or the intense colors with high-purity as ornamental colors. Then the vicissitudinous and harmonious overall effects will be built due to the accordance and contrast of colors. Therefore the color effects are decided greatly by the colors of furnishings. Overall control is necessary for dealing with indoor color, which means interior colors should be integrated and coordinated. What should be remembered is excessive accordance makes space rigid and unattractive while inordinate color contrasts makes interior space disorderly and unsystematic. However, should be avoided to enrich interior colors, as the room will become disordered. On the contrary, the appropriate ornament under principal color is supposed to be considered. Contrast colors are applied bravely in space design of small dwelling-size room as shown in figure 1. Green is the ornamental color of the room and it endows the room with great vitality and makes indoor environmental colors vivid and lively through the principle of accordance including change and change belonging to accordance.

The Coordination of Fundamental Elements in Interior Color Design

As indoor space is limited, only use appropriate primary hue and accent color, can we achieve a perfect integration in the specific and whole space. Primary hue is the basic hue the whole space present and accent color is the leading hue. Primary hue is the theme of indoor colors for it displays the functions and characteristics of indoor space and exerts strong influences on the creation of atmosphere and artistic conception. Indoor accent color is usually subject to principal color. If the coordination of primary color and accent color are to be created into optic centre, there should be change and contrast except for integration. The coordination of the above factors should also form a distinct, stratified organism in which two of them interact well.
